Actuators at HyPerformance Valves

Valve Actuators

Actuators are devices used to control the movement of valves in various industrial applications. They convert energy – typically electrical, hydraulic, or pneumatic into mechanical motion to operate the valve. Essentially, they enable valves to open, close, or adjust flow rates automatically or remotely, improving operational efficiency and safety.

Take a look at some examples of actuation devices available with all our valves below:

Pneumatic Actuators

Electrical Actuators

Hydraulic Actuators

Pneumatic Actuators

Pneumatic: How does a pneumatic actuator work?

Pneumatic actuators use compressed air to operate the valve. Mining operations commonly use pneumatic because they offer speed and simplicity. Operators use these in environments with available compressed air and where they need quick response times.

Electrical Actuators

Electrical: How does an electrical actuator work?

Electric actuators use electric motors to move the valve. When you require precise control and automation, electric actuators become necessary. In mining, operators can use electric actuators in environments where they readily supply electrical power and where they need precise valve positioning.

Hydraulic Actuators

Hydraulic: How does a hydraulic actuator work?

Hydraulic actuators use hydraulic fluid to generate movement. These actuators suit heavy-duty applications where operators require high force and torque. In mining, they handle larger valves and manage situations where significant force is necessary to deal with thick slurries or high-pressure systems.

Hand Wheel Actuators

A hand wheel actuator enables users to operate a valve via the turning of a wheel. This actuator is often selected for areas where the valve is operated infrequently, due to its manual requirements. However, a hand wheel actuator can also be effective for precise control needs such as throttling. The slight turn of the wheel means that users can regulate flow in smaller increments.

Valve Gear Boxes

Another valve actuation option is via a gear box. A valve gear box is compatible with a manual hand-wheel and will provide easier control of large valves. As well as being used for large valves, valve gear boxes may also be used for high pressure systems. High pressure systems can often require a lot of force to operate, which is where a gear box will provide a safe and easy solution.

Spring Return

Spring Return Actuators

Spring return is another type of actuator that can return a valve to open or closed. Once external forces (such as air pressure) are removed, the spring will return to a default position. Typically, a spring return will feature in Fail-Safe Operations, where safety is priority. For instance in hazardous environments where fluid control could cause damage, a spring return actuator can ensure the valve returns to an open/closed position. This makes spring return an important safety back up for events such as power cuts.
